NASA’s Artemis II astronauts were not just traveling around the Moon—they also brought a surprisingly large menu with them. During the 10-day mission, the four astronauts had access to 189 different food and drink options, including macaroni and cheese, beef brisket, vegetable quiche, and even 58 tortillas. Did you know that Tortillas are a favorite in space because they do not create crumbs that could float around the spacecraft? The crew also had 43 cups of coffee, several desserts, and five types of hot sauce to add flavor to their meals.
Unlike astronauts during the Apollo missions, the Artemis II crew enjoyed warm meals using a compact food warmer aboard the Orion spacecraft. Since there is no refrigerator or opportunity for resupply, all food must have a long shelf life and has to be carefully selected to provide the nutrition needed for the journey. The astronauts even helped choose their menus through taste tests before the launch.
The Artemis II menu shows how space travel has advanced over the years, making life in space more comfortable while helping astronauts stay healthy, focused, and energized on their historic mission around the Moon.
